Spending - Head Matters



Does anybody ever really have enough money? It seems like there’s always something that would make your life easier or more fun—if only you had the money. There are steps you can take to make your money stretch a lot further; so it provides what you need and a lot of what you want too. By the time you complete this unit, you’ll be able to make smarter, more informed purchasing decisions and get the most you can from your earnings each month.

The information in our Spending Head Unit was developed in partnership with the Colorado Financial Planning Association,  with information from the Council for Economic Education and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).   

Here's an outline of what we will cover in this course: 

    • Understand the key factors to evaluate when making a purchase
      1. Understand why you must shop around to find the best price
      2. Know the importance of quality and quantity in a purchase and how it can impact price
      3. Determine what your needs are versus your wants
    • Know the differences as well as advantages and disadvantages of the following means of acquiring something you need or want:
      1. Borrowing
      2. Leasing
      3. Rent-to-own
    • Your spending plan
    • Understand how the government protects consumers
      1. Know what Lemon Laws are
      2. Understand when you have a three-day right to rescind a purchase and how to use it
      3. Know your rights under deceptive advertising and deceptive pricing laws
    • Identify the opportunity costs of financial decisions
