Student Loan Forgiveness

If you have federal student loan debt, you might be eligible for student loan forgiveness. To qualify for student loan forgiveness, you need to meet criteria set forth by the various forgiveness programs (which can include types of jobs held and communities in which you work).

Jobs and careers that qualify for student loan forgiveness include:
  • emergency response work (such as police, fire, EMTs)
  • government work
  • library work
  • education work (including teachers and administrators)
  • social work
  • legal assistance work
  • public health work (including nurses, medical technicians, and doctors)
  • military work (such as the Army National Guard)
  • volunteer work for qualified non-profits (such as AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps)

It’s important to note that student loan forgiveness applies to federal student loans only (such as Perkins loans, Stafford loans and PLUS loans), and not private student loans.
