Valerie has been a financial professional for more than 25 years, providing financial planning and investment management services to clients since 2001. Prior to that, she was a finance executive at a large fortune 500 corporation. Valerie joined the firm in 2004 and is the current Chairman of the FPA of Colorado.
Valerie is a Certified Financial Planning practitioner as well as a Certified Management Accountant. She is a graduate of the College for Financial Planning, and has both a BA and an MBA from the University of New Mexico. Among other non-profit affiliations, Valerie has served as President and Chairman of the Financial Planning Association of Colorado and is on the Board of the Ronald McDonald House Charities as a Finance Committee and Granting Committee member.
Valerie has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Investors Business Daily, and Smart Money.
Paul R. Harrison, currently an adjunct professor at Metro State College’s College of Financial Planning, graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York with a bachelors degree in economics in 1993. Mr. Harrison earned his designation as a Certified Financial Planner professional in 1999. In 2004, Mr. Harrison received his MBA degree from the University of Colorado at Denver.
Mr. Harrison holds FINRA Series 7 and 63 securities licenses. In 1996, Mr. Harrison started in financial planning as a registered representative with the Lincoln Financial Group where he worked with individuals focusing on asset protection. Mr. Harrison has worked with financial planning firms Sharkey, Howes & Javer and Means & Associates. In related work, Mr. Harrison has been a part of financial giants Charles Schwab & Company, American Century Investments and JP Morgan Chase. Currently Mr. Harrison is currently studying to sit for the Certified Public Accounting exams.
Patrick is the President and a Principal of SimonDavis Brokerage Services, Inc. Patrick began his career in financial services in 1996. He has broad experience as an insurance agent, a registered representative and a fee-only financial planner. Prior to joining SimonDavis, Patrick served as a Vice President in the Wealth Management Division of the sixth largest bank in the country. His responsibilities and expertise included financial and estate planning, asset management and advanced case design for the bank’s high net worth and trust clients.
Susie Johnston founded Cherry Hills Investment Advisors in 1999. After managing the brokerage department of a branch bank, she trained under very successful and prominent financial planners in the Denver area for six years. She successfully completed the Certified Financial Planning Licensee Program in 1999 and attended the Institute of Certified Financial Planners CFP Residency program, before starting her own business. She is a Registered Investment Advisor with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Susie's degree and early career was in education, which helps her to simplify and communicate complex concepts to clients. She enjoys helping clients learn more about investing so they can make better decisions.
Susie is currently a member of the Financial Planning Association of Colorado where she served as President and Chairman of the Board of this distinguished organization. She also served on the board of the Estate Planning Council of Southeast Denver. Susie attends and conducts study groups with other Certified Financial Planners and has been interviewed by the Rocky Mountain News, Denver Post, Financial Planning Magazine, Channel 9 News, CBS MarketWatch, Business Week, as well as the Wall Street Journal. Susie has also appeared on ABC's Nightly News.
Bruce Potter is a Certified Financial Planner® and a registered investment advisor with over 27 years of experience. He owns a fee-only, financial planning and investment advisory business that serves middle and upper income Americans. His company provides financial solutions to individuals, families, and small businesses, including developing comprehensive financial plans and personalized management of investments for retirement, college savings, and other goals. He has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Education.
In addition to his financial planning experience, he taught business, marketing, and personal finance for 23 years where his passions included helping students become financially literate. He belongs to the Financial Planning Association and has served as Chairperson of the Government Relations/ Professional Issues Committee of FPA of Colorado. He has also been very involved in promoting financial literacy in K-12 schools in Colorado and is currently serving on the State of Colorado’s committee to develop standards for Financial Literacy that will be required for all Colorado students starting in 2011.
In addition to practicing as a Certified Public Accountant for several years, Kate has worked in the financial services industry for 20-plus years. She began her career working on the Floor of the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange and later opened the Denver office of a New York investment firm as Principal. Kate has worked with securities analysts, portfolio managers and traders at the institutional level. She turned her focus to personal financial planning in 2001 and joined the Firm in 2005.
Kate holds an undergraduate business degree from the The George Washington University and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a Certified Financial Planner® and a Certified Public Accountant.
Kate was the 2008 President of the Financial Planning Association of Colorado and was on the Board of ArtReach, a non-profit serving at-risk communities. Kate was recently invited to speak on a national NPR radio program and has been a resource for Smartmoney.com and Investment Advisor magazine. She has also appeared as a guest on KUSA Moneyline9 in Denver.
Dr. Carrie Payne is a clinical psychologist who has been practicing psychotherapy for the past ten years. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Denver, Graduate School of Professional Psychology. She has worked at a variety of settings, including university counseling centers, hospitals, and employee assistance programs. She currently has a private practice in Denver and works for the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital. Dr. Payne specializes in using relational and mindfulness based approaches for anxiety reduction, depression, relationship problems, and sport and executive performance enhancement. Dr. Payne also specializes in the psychology of finances and family dynamics.
Dr. Katie Sauer is the Director of the Organization for Economic Literacy (www.econliteracy.org) and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at the Metropolitan State College of Denver. She earned her doctorate in economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In addition to 10 years of experience in higher education, Katie has worked as a research analyst for the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C.. She lives in Boulder with her husband and enjoys painting, traveling, and practicing yoga.
Dr. Janet Gullickson, past Chief Outreach and Client Relations Officer for Colorado’s CollegeInvest, is a lifelong educator. A former college president and organizational development consultant, she is now the District Academic Services Officer at Community Colleges of Spokane. While at CollegeInvest, Janet worked to increase Coloradans’ financial access to post-secondary education by providing financial aid, scholarship, savings, and financial literacy information. She has a doctorate in education from the University of Minnesota and is the mother of two children.
Before returning to higher education to pursue an MBA at the University of Colorado Denver, Andres Pedraza was a Community Relations Manager for CollegeInvest. Andres has a B.A. from the University of Denver and is also completing a Master’s in Journalism and Communications from the University of Miami. Prior to working for CollegeInvest, Andres was a General Producer for a morning news show on KNRV 1150AM. During his tenure in the radio station, he interacted with a very diverse population from all corners of Colorado. Andres also served as a consultant for a Colorado state wide voter registration drive geared to Latino families. Close to 20,000 new voters registered for the 2008 election period through this work. In his free time Andres enjoys watching movies and playing soccer.
Katie Powell was the Financial Education Program Manager at CollegeInvest for the last three years of her tenure at that company. Having spent over a decade working in financial services, she has a passion for simplifying the complex concepts of personal finance and for the importance of higher education, which she used to educate students and families about student loans while working at CollegeInvest. Katie now works in marketing for Munro Supply, Inc., her family's business.
Dr. Teresa Yohon is currently a researcher and instructor at Colorado State University (CSU). Teresa's background includes teaching business, economics, and marketing for 18 years; working as a teacher educator at CSU; and providing leadership as a Colorado program director for business and marketing. She has written over 20 journal articles and presented over 40 times on education and technology issues. She also provides technical assistance through her company, Education and Training Connections (ETC).
